TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In addition to a number of events surrounding Alumni weekend at Alabama, the baseball team will honor the 1983 College World Series team prior to the start of the game against No. 2 LSU on Saturday night.

A host of events will take place this weekend with the university, including the annual A-Club golf tournament at O’Colony Golf Course on Friday. Friday night, the baseball alumni can come to Sewell-Thomas Stadium and register for the weekend’s events at the main entrance to the stadium. The Friday night game between Alabama and LSU will begin at 6:35 p.m. CST, and will include a performance from the Zooperstars.

Saturday, the team will host a brunch from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, in the left field batting cages. The annual A-Day football game will begin at 2 p.m. CST, at Bryant Denny Stadium, and the baseball team will then battle the second-ranked LSU Tigers at 7 p.m. CST. Prior to the start of the Alabama versus LSU baseball game, the Tide will recognize the 1983 team that finished runner up to Texas in the school’s second trip to the College World Series.

Key members of that team were Dave Magadan, who hit .525 that season, Ted McClendon, Rob Skates, Frank Velleggia, Allan Stalling, and Craig Shipley on the position side. For the pitchers, key players were Rick Browne, Dean Hayes, Jeff Brewer, Troy Brauchle, Tim Meacham, and Alan Dunn, the current pitching coach at LSU.

The head coach for the 1983 squad was Barry Shollenberger, who was the skipper of the Crimson Tide from 1980-94, posting a 487-334-1 record. That record included two SEC champions, three NCAA Regional appearances and the school’s second appearance at the CWS. Shollenberger departed Alabama as the school’s all-time winningest coach, before handing the reigns over the Jim Wells.

Alabama will also hold a silent auction throughout the weekend and will auction off a total of 22 items. Included in the list of auction items are six Alabama game-worn sleeveless jerseys, team autographed “A” baseballs, an autographed Nike Alabama baseball wood bat, an autographed Nick Saban football, summer camp giveaways and Alabama baseball gear.
