OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Alabama senior center fielder Taylor Dugas (Lafayette, La.) was named one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
In the classroom, Dugas carries a 3.35 grade point average as a general health major. He has been named to the SEC Honor Roll all three years as a member of the Crimson Tide, and has been on the Dean's List once in his time at Alabama. After being drafted in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft, Dugas returned to school to finish his degree and play his senior season. Dugas sets a tremendous example of leadership for his teammates, both on and off the field. A hardworking player, he is extremely dedicated to the game of and encourages and motivates his teammates to work hard and improve.
The senior outfielder is part of the Alabama baseball team that won the Alabama Athletic Department Community Service Award in 2010 and 2011. The baseball team's community service efforts included; partnering with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation to adopt Grayson Anderson who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2008, Project Angle Tree, Field of Angels, and the Miracle League of Tuscaloosa. Additionally, Dugas assisted with tornado relief efforts in the Tuscaloosa area, to remove debris and salvage property from homes of local community members hit by the April 27, 2011 tornado.
On the field, Taylor was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the NCBWA and Rivals.com in 2009. As a sophomore in 2010, he garnered first team All-America honors from Baseball America after finishing second in the SEC with a .395 batting average and leading the conference with a .525 on-base percentage.
A three-time All-SEC honoree, Dugas was an ABCA First Team All-South Region honoree and a national ABCA Gold Glove outfielder in 2011. In his three seasons at Alabama, primarily as the team’s leadoff hitter, he has helped the team advance to the NCAA tournament three times, including a Super Regional appearance in 2010, while helping the Crimson Tide post a 114-54 (.678) record.
With a career batting average of .365 and an on-base percentage of .455, he entered his senior season ranked in the top-10 at Alabama in seven offensive categories, including: batting average (7th), runs (6th), hits (8th), doubles (6th), triples (3rd), walks (3rd) and sacrifice bunts (7th). He is on pace to move into the career top-10 lists in; games play, games started, at-bats, total bases and stolen bases and can set the school records in at-bats, runs, hits, doubles and triples.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2012 NCAA College World Series, which will be held June 15-26 in Omaha.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I head coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
