TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama baseball team opens practice this Sunday, Feb. 1, at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, the first official day of preseason practice according to NCAA rules.

The Crimson Tide has been holding individual drills and weight room workouts since January 12 in preparation for the first day of practice.

“We have been working since January 12 getting ready for this day,” Alabama head Coach Jim Wells said.  “We have a lot of players back from last year and the trip to Cuba helped us make some personnel decisions.  We are anxious to get started with the regular season three weeks away.”

Alabama will hold its first practice on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.  The team is also scheduled to hold its first intrasquad game on Sunday beginning at 2:15 p.m., with all pitchers throwing at least one inning on the mound.

The Crimson Tide will practice daily beginning at 2 p.m. with another round of intrasquad games set for Feb. 6-8.  Practices and scrimmages are open to the public.

Alabama will hold its 26th annual GrandSlammers Barbecue and Fan Day on Saturday, Feb. 7.  The event begins with a free kid’s clinic at 9:30 a.m. (per NCAA rules, this event is limited to boys and girls from kindergarten through seventh grade), followed by the barbecue at 11:30 a.m. in the CAVE at Coleman Coliseum.  The day will conclude with a scrimmage at 1:30 p.m.
