HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
“We fought from behind the entire ball game from the first inning on. For the second week in a row we’re struggling on the mound a little bit. Our command has left us a little bit, and were not getting in good counts and not making a lot of quality pitches right now. Offensively, I think were swinging the bat very well. We didn’t do a good job when we had some opportunities to string some hits together. Two of the three runs were solo homers but I still like where we are offensively. We have to get a better start for one and the bullpen has to come in. We have to come out with that strong mentality and attack mode where we are pounding that strike zone. Right now, there are just entirely way too many balls being thrown. We have a real battle tomorrow; it’s obviously a huge game. There throwing their best guy who’s really good. He’s a potential second round draft pick who’s been throwing on Friday’s but they have moved him back to Sunday. We’re going to have to come out because it’s going to be a real battle tomorrow.”
On Spencer Turnbull
“Right now everything is up in the strike zone. I think with a lot of our guys the confidence level for some reason has been knocked down some. You can see we are pitching very tentatively and not attacking. He’s one of the guys that falls into that category. He’s just not throwing strike one and he’s getting down in the count, missing in the middle of the plate a little too often. They’re putting good swings on us right now.”
On tomorrow’s game being very important
“Tomorrow is game 52 so I think we’ve played enough of these that they know what is at stake, just as they did last night. You have to go out there and just play your game. I think the biggest thing is you have to go out and attack the game and play aggressively and go get it. It always starts on the mound. The tempo will be set with Justin Kamplain tomorrow on the bump. That’s what we need right now is a good, quality start so we can let our offense get going and let our defenders make some plays behind him. When we do that, we are a pretty good baseball team.”
On using a lot of the bullpen
“We might have to recycle some guys tomorrow. I trust Justin (Kamplain) as he’s thrown the ball well for us. He’s a guy that’s been a big game pitcher for us and we need him to be big tomorrow.”
#1 Mikey White, SS
On capturing the offense today
“We’ve been swinging the bat pretty hot, and you’re going to go through some slumps and stuff. We had 12 hits today so I think we were swinging them fine today.”
“We’re getting people on base. Toward the end of the game have to find a way to get those runs in to get us a chance to win.”
#32 Spencer Turnbull, RHP
On his performance as of late
“I’m not exactly sure what it is. I’ve lost a little bit of control and I’m leaving some fastballs up over the plate and they’re getting hit pretty hard. That’s really what it is; I’m just getting behind in counts and leaving a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate. I felt pretty good in the bullpen today, but in the first inning I gave up a couple of hits and they scored that run. I started missing with my curve ball and hit some guys with it. I kept getting behind hitters and left some fastballs over the plate.”
On working through the struggle
“Sometimes you can work through it and sometimes you can’t. It’s just one of those things.”
On tomorrow’s game
“We needed the game today but we didn’t get it. Tomorrow is really huge for us and we have a big series against Vanderbilt so we need to get this win tomorrow.”
