HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
“Well today I thought the objective was to get the win. Taylor Wolfe pitched four really good innings. That’s always really encouraging as we work toward the back of the season. It’s also really good to see Ryan Blanchard step up and get some big hits, especially with his three-run home-run. You never know with these games. A team comes in with five wins, they don’t walk anybody or make any errors, and it made us get hits. We were fortunate tonight as we got 14 of them. We did what we needed to do, that was the main thing today. Our focus goes to Troy tomorrow; they’re a really good baseball team who’s playing really hot and well. We got our guys ready to go for a big game tomorrow.”
On confidence going into Troy
“The majority of the guys had multiple hits as we drove some balls. Austen Smith had a home run and we hit some balls good. Anytime you win it’s a little feel-good as you move forward. I think after this past weekend we needed that. The timing was good for us and now we can get into tomorrow and feel a little bit better about things.”
On Taylor Wolfe’s performance
“It’s been a year that we have settled in on some guys. We haven’t used much more toward the bottom of that bullpen. The one fear with Taylor (Wolfe) was the command of the strike zone prior to today. He can fit in as a left-handed situational guy, just a guy that can come in and throw strikes. The one thing about Taylor is he’s been out there a lot prior to this year. That was very encouraging what we just saw here today.”
Responding as a team when the game was tied 3-3
“They answered right back which was big. You get a 3-0 lead and start to get a little comfortable and boom, all of sudden they answer with three. For us to come right back and get the lead I thought was a key point in the ball game.”
#25 Ryan Blanchard, LF
On the success the team had offensively
“Hitting is very contagious. We were able to string some at-bats there and it’s just good for the team confidence wise. We have a big week ahead and we have to make sure we are clicking on all phases of the game.
On answering during a tied game
“You just have to take the momentum back from the other team. They did a good job stringing some at-bats together and we had to answer back. We have to have our pitcher’s back and when they give up some runs we have answer.”
On his first homerun
“It just felt good off the bat and finally getting into something. I’m glad to do it for the team and get a big win for us.
#27 Taylor Wolfe, LHP
On getting a few innings in under his belt
“I felt like a little kid again getting to play the game. The pitching has been great for us so far this year and I’ve just been waiting to get my opportunity. I’m glad I got out there and made the most of it.”
On his overall performance
“I felt great. My arm has been feeling great for a while. I’ve been waiting for that opportunity to get in but everything tonight was awesome.”
#5 Brett Booth, 1B
On tonight’s game
“We got eight games left and we know we have to win. We have to win now so it was good to get off to an early start and to score early. Taylor (Wolfe) came in and threw the ball well. Ryan (Blanchard) had a big hit. I think you saw constant offensive pressure while getting a couple big hits late to keep that thing going.”
On everyone playing really well offensively and defensively
“We have to start putting pressure on teams early. Offensively, start early and keep it going on often instead of waiting till late in the game to make a run. On the pitching side we just need to keep pounding the strike zone and let our defense work.”
