COACH Mitch Gaspard
“I thought that Charley Sullivan did a super job today going seven innings. We had a rough eighth and ninth inning there in the bullpen when they took the lead. There’s a lot to be said for this group the way things have been this year. After losing the lead, it was great to see how they responded there in the bottom of the ninth.”
On this being a gut check:
“One thing about this bunch, we have had our struggles no question throughout the course of the year. I have never questioned the character of our players. It has been a year that has had some unbelievable misfortune, along with some misfortune that we created. They continue to come out and continue to play hard every day. There have not been any games where I questioned our effort. It was a gut check and our guys passed.”
On Austen Smith’s walk-off hit:
“He missed it buy a day, he had it a couple of weeks ago, then today comes back and passes that one between the gap to win the game. One thing we talk about is give your best at-bat at the right time. And today that was it, we needed his best at-bat at that spot and he gave it to us. It started with Jared Reaves getting a base hit and then Ben Moore follows him up with one up the middle. Then obviously Smith gets the big blow. Its 27 outs, the game isn’t over until that last out is recorded.”
#18, Austen Smith, 1B
On winning in a situation like this game:
“It was really exciting coming to the plate, trying to help your team. I just needed a pitch to hit and it happened. You come into the ninth inning with the lead and they come back and get some runs, then you come down in the ninth and it feels like it is all about to be over. You can’t think like that you just have to know that it’s going to happen. We have been putting it together all year in the ninth inning and we just believed in ourselves and just let it happen.”
#29, Charley Sullivan, RHP
On his first time back:
“I felt good, I have not been throwing a lot the past two weeks and I really feel fresh. I have been working on the out pitch; the slider was really helping me out of some jams. It felt good being back in the starting role.”
On the ninth:
“Right now it is about playing well and playing as a team. We have to keep it together. We cannot break down at the end of the year, no matter what the record is, we still have to play together as a team. To get the win and avoid the sweep is great. It stinks to not get the decision, but we won the game so that is all that matter right now.”
