Recap | Box Score
HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
On the lineup tonight
“Two things: one is obviously we wanted to give Brett Booth a night off from behind the plate and so we moved him to first. Secondly we actually have been discussing putting Kenny Roberts in the leadoff hole and having Georgie [Salem] in the two-hole – a couple of things with that – one [is] if Kenny can get on it frees up the four hole and secondly I think Georgie is used to hitting more in the middle of the lineup and he has done a good job. I really think Kenny is maybe more suited for that leadoff hole right now. We wanted to look at it – I liked what I saw tonight. We were able to get off the deck early and get started and it was good to get those two guys on and Ben gets the big hit. I thought offensively – especially in the front part of the game – I thought we had good flow within the ballgame.”
On Ben Moore delivering tonight
“He did and we certainly think that can be a confidence-builder for him and we spent a lot of time yesterday, worked a lot with Coach Phillips. I thought his swing was good today in BP and he put some good swings on some pitches today and I thought Kenny swung the bat really well today. This weekend it’s going to take multiple guys being good and delivering those big hits. I think we’ll have opportunities again and this is a weekend when you’re playing a good team like LSU where you have to deliver when you get in those spots.”
On the pitching from Mike Oczypok tonight
“Yeah, I mean I think that is 11 innings now in a row of shutout ball and simply couldn’t ask for anything more from Mike and quite honestly I’m not surprised. He’s pitched that way since the fall – he really just needed an opportunity and he’s taken advantage of his opportunity in the past couple of weeks.”
#7 Ben Moore, C
On playing behind the plate tonight
“It was good to get back there – I hadn’t been back there in about a year. I know Brett [Booth] wasn’t happy about me being back there, but I was pretty excited to get back there and put the gear on again.”
On hitting tonight
“I think I was locked in a little more. Me and Coach Phillips have been working a little bit more in the cage and I tweaked my swing a little bit and just kind of simplified things a little bit. I worked on staying on the ball and it paid off tonight.”
#5 Brett Booth, 1B
On what the theme was offensively
“The theme was we had to get started earlier. The past few weeks we hot gotten started pretty slow and we couldn’t get any momentum going. I think tonight we started off pretty early scoring two in the first and the third and then scoring again in the fourth. It really lets everybody kind of sit back and kind of relax and start swinging the bats a little better and you saw that tonight.”
On Mike Oczypok
“He really does a good job of competing. He’s thankful for the opportunity to get out there and throw and you can tell every time he gets out there. He takes full advantage of it. He pounds the strike zone, competes and keeps throwing strikes and lets the defense work.”
