HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
“I thought for starters on the mound, Tucker [Hawley] gave us a good start and the bullpen came in and did a nice job. We had some guys that we wanted to get some work in and they all did a pretty solid job. Offensively, we kind of sputtered there for about five innings and it was big with two outs there, Miller starts us out with a walk, [Georgie] Salem gets a single and then Kenny Roberts gets the big three-run blow and we follow it up with another three-run homer. You don’t see that as often as you used to – back-to-back three run homers in the same inning. That was good to see and then from there I thought the offense got going and was much better in the back end of the game.”
Thoughts on the two three run home runs
“I’ve got no problem with three-run homers. That was good to see and to especially have one that was a no-doubter. You kind of hang on every breath right now when [the ball] gets close to the wall. It was good – I’m happy for Kenny Roberts – not only tonight, but the way he has stayed with it and stuck with a plan and really had a consistent year for us both offensively and defensively and that was a big blow for him tonight to hit the three-run homer.”
Thoughts on the importance of the Andrew Miller walk in the sixth inning
“One thing about Miller is, he is a grinder and that’s really what he has brought to the table, particularly in the last two or three weeks. He leads the team in hit by pitches, he walks, he finds a way to be an inning starter like he did with two outs and you are comfortable with him. You know he is going to fight and grind in every at-bat and that was big to get that started with two outs in the inning.”
#3 Kenny Roberts, 3B
Thoughts on the sixth inning
“I feel it was important that we answered. We have been swinging the bats well and you have to give credit to the starter – he threw the ball well, but we finally got to him.”
Thoughts on how the guys in front of him got it started in the sixth inning
“For one, it lets me know that there are others guys playing hard. The thing is it was all with two outs and it started with a walk and that’s what coach preaches – two outs don’t mean anything. Miller got the walk and Georgie got the hit and I stepped up.”
#18 Austen Smith, 1B
Thoughts on the sixth inning and scoring six times with two outs
“Like you said, Kenny started it out with that big home run, but baseball is played with two outs. It’s a two out game – whoever is better with two outs is usually going to win the game.”
Thoughts on the momentum from playing well in a mid-week game heading into a pivotal SEC series against Arkansas
“It just boosts your confidence and allows you to stay hot – our bats kept rolling, pitching was great, and sets the tone for this weekend.”
