PENSACOLA, Fla. - Freshman pitcher Nick Eicholtz threw seven strong innings and freshman outfielder Casey Hughston had a grand slam as the No. 30 Alabama Crimson Tide posted a 10-5 victory over the Troy Trojans, on Tuesday night in front of a sold out crowd of 5,038 at Whibbs Maritime Park in Pensacola, Fla.
In his fifth start of the season, Eicholtz (2-0) allowed one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. The only run Eicholtz gave up came on the first batter of the game, when Clay Holcomb homered to left field on the fourth pitch. After that, Eicholtz allowed two hits, walked four and hit one batter the rest of the night.
Mikey White led an Alabama (16-8) hit-parade that produced 13 hits with his second four-hit performance of his career. White had three singles and a double, scored twice and drove in one. Austen Smith was 3-for-3 with two singles and a double and Georgie Salem had his first career triple to go along with two RBI and a run scored.
After Troy (14-11) took the early lead on the Holcomb leadoff home run, Alabama answered with three runs in the bottom of the second off starting and losing pitcher William Shell (3-2). With two outs in the inning, Will Haynie walked and Chance Vincent singled to spark a three-run rally. Salem tripled to right center field to drive in two then White followed with a single up the middle to make the score 3-1.
Alabama extended its lead to 7-1 when Casey Hughston hit a grand slam with no outs in the bottom of the third. It was Hughston's third home run of the season and first since he hit two in his first career start against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 22.
The Tide added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Wass had a two-out RBI single to right field to drive in White, who doubled to start the inning. The Tide scored again in the seventh when White scored on a double by Moore and the Tide reached the double-digit mark for the sixth time this season when Smith scored on a groundout by Haynie.
Taylor Guilbeau replaced Eicholtz in the eighth inning, where he allowed three runs on four hits, as the Trojans cut the Tide's lead to 10-4. Thomas Burrows allowed a run on a sacrifice fly while giving up three singles in the ninth inning.
Alabama returns to Southeastern Conference action this weekend with a three-game series against the No. 9 ranked Mississippi Rebels. First pitch for the series between Alabama and Ole Miss is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CT on Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
