TROY, Ala. – The Alabama baseball team had just four hits in a 9-0 non-conference loss to the Troy Trojans, on Tuesday night in front of a record crowd of 2,936 fans at Riddle-Pace Field. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to 8-13 overall while the Trojans improved to 10-9 with the victory.
After Alabama starting pitcher Jon Keller left the game, Troy scored eight of its nine runs in the next three innings, including four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Keller made his first career start for the Tide and allowed two hits in 3.0 scoreless innings.
Jared Reaves collected two of the Tide’s four hits, as he finished the night 2-for-3. Hunter Gregory and James Tullidge were 1-for-3, each with a single. Alabama used a total of seven pitchers in the game, whom combined to give up nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits with six walks and six strikeouts.
Austin Golden and Logan Pierce led the Trojans with three hits each. Pierce scored three times, and Danny Collins and Boone Shear each scored twice. Troy relief pitcher, Nate Hill (3-1), threw 3.1 innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and one walk to record his third win of the season.
After three and a half scoreless innings, Troy broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning, which started with two walks and an error. Cary Baxter replaced Keller in the fourth and would get the loss after not recording an out after facing three batters in the inning. The Trojans got just one hit in the inning, but capitalized on three walks and two errors by the Tide that helped the Trojans open a 4-0 lead.
Troy extended its lead to 6-0 following a two-run home run by Collins off Chazz Otwell in the fifth, then added another run in the inning on an RBI single by Chase Mathis. Troy added another run in the sixth to make the score 8-0, and an RBI single by Mathis in the eighth capped the scoring at 9-0.
Alabama returns to Southeastern Conference action on Friday night with game one of a three-game series against the No. 16-ranked Mississippi Rebels. First pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., from Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Starting pitchers for the weekend series have not been announced.
