HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
Opening Statement:
“Tonight we looked really poor in every aspect of the game. We got a poor start on the mound and had command issues. Offensively, we’ve had a week and a half struggle. We saw a totally different arm tonight than we saw this weekend, but with the same result, very few hits and very few good at-bats. It has been a battle the last week and a half, trying to get some offense together. We have to get back to work and get back on track before this weekend.”

Thoughts on Memphis’ performance
“They played well. Their left hander did a nice job. He threw three pitches and they strung some hits together with a big home run. In the back of the game, some hits fell for them and we played poor defense which allowed them to stretch the lead out. They just played much better than we did, in every phase of the game.”

Thoughts on the lineup
“Right now we just have to continue to work; we have eight or nine guys scuffling at the same time. You can see it that we are just not putting good swings on the ball, behind on the fast ball, around on the breaking ball and can’t generate that offense. It has been about seven or eight games now. We just have to keep going and keep working to find what it is that is going to click. Just that quick the offense can go the other direction and start putting good swings on the ball. It is frustrating. We are all frustrated right now because we know that we are a much better team than we are showing out right now.”

Thoughts on lack of confidence
“I think that is some of it. With some returning guys I think it goes back to last season and they have been beat up a lot. That is no excuse. We have been in position to win games but you have to make the big hit or the quality pitch when it comes down to it. That is what is going to turn and get you going in the right direction. They have to understand that and we, as a coaching staff, we have to do a better job of that as well. We need to help them understand that this is not last year’s team, this is a talented team that just has to get on track and start moving in the right direction.”

Thoughts on the pitching
“I thought that Keaton [Haack] has been solid, every outing he has come out and done a pretty nice job. Actually, the last kid, Mike Oczypock, is a kid who came through the walk on track program and I know he gave up some hits but they really did not make hard contact on him. I was proud of the way he went out there and threw strikes for his first time out. Really tonight there were no highlights at all. We have to come out and get them motivated to play well in the game tomorrow night.”
