HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
Opening Statement:
“The biggest thing today was the win. We needed to get a win after this weekend.  After really struggling on the offense end of things the first two games, it was nice to get some flow in the line-up.  Ben (Moore) and Smith (Austen) had a good day, but some other guys had some good swings too.  The same way, we give a lead up, but we have the ability to respond and come back and then take it back.  I thought Ray Castillo did a really good job again out of the bullpen for us.”

Thoughts on the new approach that he wanted to see
“I think a lot of it has to do with your opponent.  Their first two pitchers did a really good job commanding the strike zone, particularly the outside part of the plate.  That’s an area we’re going to have to improve on as a team because we’re going to see a lot of arms that can do that.  Today, you saw where they helped us a little.  We had a few more walks, and some balls were left in the middle of the plate.  We had a lot more opportunities.  We’re pretty good when we get those second chances, but we have to be better when we see that Friday night type arm that can really spot up.

Thoughts on the extra base-hits today
“We found some barrels.  Mikey (White) and Ben (Moore) had some big hits.  The second half of the game you could see that our guys got a little more comfortable and started putting some good swings on the bat.”

Thoughts on if the hitting can be contagious
“That’s what this game is. It’s kind of like the big inning we had.  You want to put things in bunches and put them together.  That’s the contagiousness and it just kind of flows from there.  Once we had that inning even though we got down, we still got a pretty good frame of mind offensively from that point.”

Thoughts on the pitchers piling up the strikeouts this series
“We did. We were talking about that this morning.  It’s kind of an odd line that we had.  We had a lot of strikeouts but we gave up a lot of hits as well.  Typically, you don’t see that.  We’re striking guys out, that’s great that’s what you want but being able to minimize our pitch count.  I think there are some spots in there where we might take seven pitches to get rid of somebody when we should be doing it in four or five pitches.  You look up and your pitch count has grown 18-20 pitches through about three or four innings when you’re not putting away the guys earlier in the count.”

Thoughts on extra base hits
“We kept hitting balls hard but right at people.  Hard singles, which you can’t really complain about that but it’s nice to see a couple doubles in there.  I think after the last two days we made up our mind that we didn’t want to struggle a third day in a row.  We wanted to avoid the sweep so we came out here with a chip on our shoulder.”

Thoughts on the lead changes
“We came out and put an end to it.  I think we knew what we were capable of doing and went out there and did it.”

Thoughts on the two out rally
“That just really goes to show what this team is capable of.”

Thoughts on the pitch count and getting hits on 0-0 counts
“A lot of first pitch fastballs, and that’s what we went up there expecting.”

Thoughts on the difference from today and the past two day’s opposing pitchers
“I thought the guy today struggled throwing strikes.  We took what he gave us.  I don’t know how many walks he had but it seemed like we were walking a good bit.”

Thoughts on piling up the strikeouts this weekend
“Yeah it just seemed like every at-bat was either a hit or a strikeout.  We practice throwing low in the zone so I think a lot of the strikeouts happen because it’s a harder pitch to hit.”
