HEAD COACH Mitch Gaspard
Opening Statement:
“I thought for the second game in a row, we are certainly in an offense funk right now.  We just don’t really have a good approach.  We were hitting a lot of ground balls to the short stop; balls were away and were still hitting some balls pull-side.  Tulane has done a really good job to pitch us the same way.  Their guys have made pitches on the outer part of the plate and we have adjusted to that yet.  We have a couple guys in the line-up right now that have a good approach, but other than that it’s been an offense battle to get any kind of pressure going.  I thought Keller (Jon) had an ok start but then again, there was a lack of concentration there.  We hit a guy then we left a pitch up there for the two-run home run.  These last two games have not been indicative of the way we played prior to that.  This team now has to show that they can respond after two poor performances and comeback tomorrow and play a much better baseball game. “

Thoughts on being more aggressive
“What we’re seeing, and what has beaten us, is a consistent pattern of someone throwing the ball away.  We have to show that we can drive more balls to the middle of the field and take the ball the other way as well.  We’re taking a lot of the fastballs and I think our minds are really moving.  You’re seeing some of the youth right now with a young team.  That’s also where we need some of our older guys to respond in some of those spots.  Right now it’s kind of moving throughout the team for the last couple days.  It’s like I just told the group, its two games and you just have to bump it down and come back out and get it fixed quickly.  I trust this group, as they have worked extremely hard and I think we’ll get it corrected shortly so we can get back to being a good offensive team.”

Thoughts on the our pitching in the series
“You can see when we don’t make plays defensively and pick them up, their getting that one big hit.  Their getting people on with walks, and we’re just letting that one big pitch, that the past few weeks we’ve been able to execute.  We’re also leaving some pitches up.  You can’t take anything away from them; they’re putting good swings on us.  The biggest thing is when we’ve had a chance to put hitters away, we’re making that one pitch slip away and they’re taking advantage of it.”

Thoughts on offensive struggling to score in the series
“We just got away from our approach. The first six or seven games we scrapped had good at-bats and got on the barrel.   We’ve had pressure every inning on the defense.  You can see the first two games we haven’t had pressure.  We really have put many good at-bats together and it’s just made it really easy for the other pitcher.”
