Austin Evans has shown improvement from last season and his power arm could make him a legitimate arm out of the Crimson Tide bullpen this season ... has excellent velocity, but still needs to work on his command ... spent the summer with the Thunder Bay (Ontario, Canada) Border Cats in the wooden-bat Northwoods League ... posted a 3-1 record and 2.95 ERA in his 13 appearances on the mound ... also made four starts. he worked 39 2/3 innings and allowed 13 earned runs and 27 hits with 22 walks and 31 strikeouts ... ranked third on the team in total appearances ... he helped the Border Cats to the 2008 Northwoods League Championship with a 42-26 overall record, including a 23-11 second-half record en route to the Northern Division title ... he played on the same summer league team as UA teammates Jon Kelton and Alex Kubal.
CUBA FRIENDSHIP TOURNAMENT:
Evans made one relief appearance for the Alabama in the three-game exhibition series against Cuba ... tossed one scoreless inning in the Tide's 6-2 loss on Dec. 17, where he allowed one hit, one walk and struck out one batter.
CAREER POSTSEASON NOTES:
Evans made his postseason debut with a three-inning stint against East Carolina (June 1) in the 2008 NCAA Conway (S.C.) Regional.
Evans appeared in seven games for the Tide as a redshirt freshman ... he had no record and a 6.75 ERA ... Evans worked 9 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs and six hits, with five strikeouts and six walks ... stranded four of five inherited runners ... he made his UA debut against Nevada on Feb. 29 at the Southwest Diamond Classic in Frisco, Texas ... Evans worked one inning in his debut and allowed three runs and one hit, with two strikeouts and two walks ... he pitched two scoreless innings at North Alabama on March 11 ... Evans made his SEC debut at Kentucky on March 15 ... he worked a season-high three innings in relief against East Carolina (June 1) at the NCAA Conway Regional.
Evans was redshirted during the 2007 season.
