Cross Country Hosts Crimson Classic Saturday
Oct. 11, 2012 MEET INFORMATION | NOTES PACKAGE TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama men's and women's cross country teams will host 14 men's and 15 women's collegiate squads in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the annual Crimson Classic meet. Races begin Saturday, October 13, at 8:30 a.m. on the Harry Pritchett Running Course located adjacent to the UA Arboretum. Additionally, the women's race will serve as the team's Power of Pink event to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and help generate awareness for the early detection and prevention of the disease. "This meet will help prepare us heading into the championship portion of the season," said cross country head coach Dan Waters. "Obviously, we always look forward to running at home because we have friends and family there to watch us. And, of course, we know our course better than anybody else does so that gives us a little bit of a home course advantage. Everybody on our staff has had people in their families that have struggled with breast cancer so it is a really big weekend for us." The meet is also the last of the season before both teams travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the SEC Championships on October 26. More than 400 runners will compete in this year's Crimson Classic compared and the deep field should give both teams a great challenge before the championship meet. The men's squad will hit the course first at 8:30 a.m. for the men's 8-kilmoter race. The women's 5-kilometer race will follow the men's race at 9:10 a.m. After the collegiate races, there will be four high school races. The high school boys' elite 5-kilometer race will begin at 9:40 a.m. followed by the girls' elite 5-kilometer at 10:10 a.m. Another boys' high school 5-klometer race start at 10:45 a.m. with the meet concluding with another girls' high school 5-kilometer race starting at 11:20 a.m. Crimson Classic Schedule Like Alabama track and field and cross country on Facebook, and follow it on Twitter @AlabamaTrack.
