Sacramento, California - University of Alabama thrower Hayden Reed is the 2014 United States champion in the men's discus, having won the discus competition on Friday night at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships at Sacramento, California.

Reed, the 2014 NCAA outdoor discus champion who also won the 2013 USATF Junior Championships and the 2013 Pan-American Junior Championships, was a surprise winner against a field of seasoned, veteran athletes in his first nationals competition at the open/Olympic level. Reed won the event with a throw of 204 feet (62.19 meters) on his second attempt of the competition.

"That last round was nerve racking, (just) like NCAAs except every single thrower in the lineup today was capable of getting a farther throw," Reed said. "I'm incredibly excited to have the privilege of competing against the best athletes in the nation."

Reed, a native of Orange, Texas, competed as a redshirt freshman for the Crimson Tide during the 2014 season.
