TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - University of Alabama junior Remona Burchell was named a semifinalist for the Women's Bowerman Trophy, the highest individual honor in collegiate track and field, the Bowerman Advisory Board announced this week. Burchell is the first Bowerman Award semifinalist in Crimson Tide history.

"The Bowerman is one of the highest honors in our sport," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said. "For Remona to be on that list means that she's accomplishing great things in our sport and had a tremendous season. It's a great thing for our program."

Burchell is one of 10 semifinalist on the women's side. Of those 10, three finalists will be announced on July 10. Voting, which includes an online fan vote, opens July 28. The award winner will be announced December 17 at the annual U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Convention.

"She saved her best for last and performed her best in the biggest races, so that's why she was probably added so late in the season," Waters said. "Hopefully, she advances into the top three."

A native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Burchell won the 100 meters title in a time of 11.25 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, earlier this month. Burchell also clocked a 2014 collegiate-leading 11.03 in the 100 at the NCAA East Region Preliminary. At the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships, Burchell won the 60 meters title with a 2014 collegiate-best time of 7.11, which ranks third in collegiate history and No. 8 on this year's world list.
