Three Alabama Track and Field Athletes Garner Capital One Academic All-District Honors

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Three members of Alabama's track and field team have been selected to the 2014 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Track & Field/Cross Country Team it was announced this week.

Junior Nia Barnes, senior Alexis Paine and sophomore Kevin Shannon all earned places on the district team and will move forward to the national ballot.

Barnes, a native of West Orange, N.J., will compete in the hammer throw next week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. In the classroom, she owns a 4.0 GPA while studying telecommunications and film/media production.

Barnes recently finished third in the hammer throw at the SEC Outdoor Championships. She followed that with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Region Preliminary after throwing the hammer a distance of 203 feet, 9 inches--a mark that ranks second in school history.

A 2013 Capital One Academic All-American, Paine, a native of Mobile, Ala., recently graduated from Alabama with a degree in English and a 3.89 GPA. She finished her Tide career as the school's most storied pole vaulter--earning All-American honors three times, winning the 2013 SEC Indoor Championship and bettering the school record multiple times in the event.

A native of Vestavia Hills, Ala., Shannon, maintains a 3.98 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. He posted three top-five finishes in the javelin during the 2014 outdoor season. His throw of 207 feet, 5 inches, at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays on March 20 ranks sixth in school history.
