Diondre Batson and Claire Turner Named to SEC Track & Field Community Service Team

May 20, 2014

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama senior sprinter Diondre Batson (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior distance runner Claire Turner (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) have been named to the 2014 Southeastern Conference Track & Field Community Service team, the conference office announced.

Both Batson and Turner played large roles in the track & field team's community outreach efforts, both in the Tuscaloosa community and on foreign soil.

Batson, the 2014 NCAA indoor 60-meter champion who also has won SEC titles in the outdoor 100 (2013) and the indoor 200 (2014), has volunteered with the DCH "Just For You" Day, assisted at the Glen Haven Nursing Home, and has shared advice and motivational lessons to students at Davis Emerson Middle School, Verner Elementary and Crossing Points School. Batson has stuffed candy bags as Halloween gifts for area youth, participated in the Alabama Athletics Halloween Extravaganza for kids and has been involved in mentorship at Rock Quarry Middle School in Tuscaloosa.

Turner, in her final season as a distance runner for the Crimson Tide, has volunteered with the Alabama Athletics Halloween Extravaganza, the Sprayberry Elementary "Tailgating with the Stars" program, Hatch's House of Hope and Soles for Souls. She also participated in the construction of an orphanage on a mission trip to Mexico and was part of the Athletes in Action Track and Field Zimbabwe Ministry.

The SEC supports a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight athletes from every SEC school who gives back to the community via superior service efforts.
