TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
University of Alabama freshman track and field athlete Elias Hakansson has been named the Southeastern Conference's Men's Track and Field Freshman of the Week, the SEC Office announced on Tuesday.
Hakansson, from Halmstad, Sweden, shattered the Alabama school record throw in the men's hammer throw at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays on Friday, March 22. He obliterated a 15-year-old school record in the hammer, eclipsing the previous school mark of 195 feet, 4 inches, set by Derrick Jones in 1998. Accomplished the feat on his first attempt in a series of five in which all three of his legal throws exceeded Jones' mark and finished the day with a best of 210-0 and ended the day owning the three best throws in UA history.
Hakansson now owns the indoor weight throw school record and the outdoor hammer throw mark in his first season at the Capstone. He currently ranks seventh in the nation and second among freshmen in the hammer throw.
