Tuscaloosa, Ala. - University of Alabama junior sprinter Remona Burchell has been named as one of 10 elite women's track and field student-athletes recognized on The Bowerman Trophy Women's Preseason Watch List, announced Thursday.

Burchell, a native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, has burst into prominence in her first year at Alabama after a standout career at Barton County Community College in Kansas. Last Saturday night, she won the national title at 60 meters in a 2014 collegiate-best 7.11 at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships by .01 over rival Watch List member Dezerea Bryant of Kentucky, moving her up to No. 3 on the all-time collegiate performers list and equal to No. 8 on the 2014 world list. Burchell also ran 7.20 in the prelims and had finished runner-up to Bryant at the SEC Championships in February over 60 meters in 7.24.

Burchell is only the second athlete in Alabama history to make the Watch List for the Bowerman, regarded as `The Heisman' of collegiate track and field, is awarded each year to the top male and female collegiate athletes in the sport of NCAA track and field. Burchell and former NCAA men's 400-meter champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Kirani James are the lone Crimson Tide athletes to earn the distinction, James having been on the men's watch list in 2012.

The Watch List is determined by the Women's Watch List Committee, which is made up of four individuals. Each of the four submits an undisclosed rank-ordered top 10 list and the 10 student-athletes who garner the most vote-points are included on the Watch List. Student-athletes who received votes but did not make the top 10 are also listed.
