Jacopo Lahbi Named SEC Freshman Runner of the Week

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Freshman Jacopo Lahbi of the University of Alabama track and field team has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Freshman Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Lahbi, a January enrollee at Alabama competing in his second collegiate competition, was second in the men's 800 meters in 1:48.77 at the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky., clocking the fourth-fastest time in the nation this season and the third-best indoor 800 meters time in school history.

One of the top young 800-meter runners in Italy and Europe, Lahbi has extensive experience competing in international meets and entered Alabama with a personal best in the 800 meters of 1:47.52 set in July, 2013. Lahbi also has a best time of 48.42 in the 400 meters and has run 51.12 in the indoor 400. An experienced international competitor, Lahbi competed as a member of Italy's national team at the 2012 IAAF Junior World Championships in Barcelona, Spain and was a semi-finalist in the 800 at the 2013 European Athletics U23 Championships in Finland.

Lahbi and the Alabama track and field team continue the 2013 indoor season this Friday-Saturday (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) at the Indiana Relays at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.
