HOOVER, Ala. -

The Alabama cross country teams opened the 2014 season by winning both the men's and women's races in a dual meet with Samford at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala., Friday evening.

The Crimson Tide men's team swept the top-five spots in the five-kilometer race. Alabama finished perfect with 15 team points to Samford's 40.

Rookie Jeff Edmondson led the young squad, which consisted of four freshmen and a sophomore, across the finish line in a time of 16:30.44. The other four, including the three who made their Tide debuts, crossed the line within three seconds of Edmondson. Freshman Connor Ferrentino crossed the line in a time of 16:31.87, just slightly ahead of sophomore Evan Prizy (16:31.91). Freshman Andrew Bull followed in a time of 16:32.58, just ahead of his twin brother, freshman Garrett Bull (16:32.90).

"I was incredibly happy with how our men ran today," UA head track and field/cross country coach Dan Waters said. "We ran a very young team so they could become accustomed to a college cross country race.  I was very impressed with the way they finished today."

The Tide women, who fielded an all-freshman squad, earned a 22-33 win over the Bulldogs. Veronica Lyle, who ran the two-mile course in a time of 11:13.19, won the race to lead the Tide. Alabama's Emily Edwards crossed the finish line second in a time of 11:24.14. Taking home a fifth-place finish was Alison Ringle (11:48.42). Ringle was followed by Elizabeth Scott (12:07.57) in sixth and Caroline Barlow, who took eighth in a time of 12:12.40.

"Both of our teams really showed up today," Waters said. "We only ran five athletes in both of our races, which meant there was very little room for error. Going into today's races, everyone knew they had to make a contribution. I think it is very cool that everyone rose to the occasion and led us to our first two wins of the season."

Up next, the Tide takes travels to North Carolina where the men and women will compete in the Asheville Cross Country Carnival on September 20.
