Medellin, Colombia - University of Alabama track & field athlete Hayden Reed won the discus on Friday night at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia, with a winning throw of 205 feet, 0 inches (62.49 meters). Reed made his winning effort on his final throw of the competition after showing improvement on each of his six attempts.

"He did a great job," said UA throws coach Doug Reynolds. "He battled back from adversity. He broke a discus off the cage on his second attempt. He was third going into the finals and he moved up every throw in final with the winning throw coming on final throw. That kind of mental focus and composure under pressure is an invaluable foundation for future success as his career develops."

Reed, who redshirted at Alabama during the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons, earned a spot on the U.S. National Team in June by winning the USATF Junior National Championships. He will be a redshirt freshman in the upcoming 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons.

A native of Orange, Texas, Reed attended Little Cypress-Mauriceville high school. As a senior, he was the 2012 Texas Class 4A state champion in the discus (196-2) and was second in the shot put (62-5 1/4) . As junior, won the 2011 Texas Class 4A state champion in both the shot put (62-8 3/4) and the discus (186-3).

The Pan American Junior Athletics Championship showcases many top international junior athletes. The Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships are open to athletes age 16 to 19 as of December 31, 2013.
