Track & Field Wraps Up Third Outdoor Meet of the Season
March 31, 2012 OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Alabama track and field team continued its outdoor season with 22 top-10 finishes at the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday in Oxford, Miss. Amethyst Holmes led the Tide by continuing her outstanding season by tacking another four feet onto her personal best in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 190-8, the fourth best throw in school history, to finish sixth in the event. Lee Stowers followed her with a personal best of her own at 167-11 to finish ninth. Bekah Hoppis was second overall in the women’s javelin, but first among collegiate competitors, with a throw of 133-11. Shani Chandler also added to her growing list of accolades in the 400-meter hurdles with her third win in as many meets this season in 59.04. In the 100-meter hurdles Kaylon Eppinger and Audra Frimpong finished second and seventh, respectively, in 13.86 and 14.36. The sprints saw the Crimson Tide record three personal bests as Dwayne Extol finished third in the men’s 200 meters in 20.99 while Joel Lynch recorded a time of 47.89 to finish sixth in the men’s 400 meters. For the women’s sprinters, Camilla Armstead was third in the 200 meters with a 23.89 finish. The women’s distance runners turned in three top-10 finishes in the 1,500 meters with Leigh Gilmore winning in 4:32.39 while Elsbeth Denton and Katlyn Will finished just behind her in fifth and seventh, respectively. Gary Bradbury finished fifth in the men’s race at 3:49.97. The jumps also produced well on Saturday with Tyler Campbell clearing seven feet for the second time this season in the men’s high jump with a clearance of 7-1. In the horizontal jumps Warrick Campbell was third in the triple jump, Kamal Fuller seventh in the long jump and freshman Merilyn Uudmae came in third in the women’s triple jump. The Crimson Tide will have a week off from competition to train and prepare for its next meet, the Spec Towns Invitational, April 13-14 in Athens, Ga.
