Tuscaloosa, Ala. - Sophomore Elias Hakansson shattered the school record en route to a victory in the hammer throw Thursday afternoon as Alabama hosted the first day of the John Mitchell Alabama Relays at Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.
Each of Hakansson's six marks Thursday was better than his school record entering the day (214 feet, 11 inches), but his sixth and final throw of the day spanned 234 feet, 2 inches (71.38 meters), breaking the school record by nearly 20 feet. Junior Charodd Richardson finished third in the event with a personal record of 203 feet, 11 inches/62.16 meters.
Junior Nia Barnes placed second in the women's hammer throw with a personal record of 193 feet, 9 inches, a mark that ranks third in school history. Samford's Emily Allen won the event with a mark of 195 feet, 11 inches.
In the men's javelin, sophomore Kevin Shannon set a personal record with a throw of 207 feet, 5 inches (63.22 meters) while placing fourth. That mark ranks sixth in Alabama history under the new javelin implement. Tennessee's Kyle Quinn won the event with a throw of 247 feet, setting a Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium record. Alabama freshman Ryan Glosson finished 17th in the event.
Through the first four events of the women's heptathlon, Alabama sophomore Lacey Dent collected 3,019 points. She will enter the final events on Friday in third place. Dent finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.39/929 points), sixth in the high jump (4-11.75/644 points), fifth in the shot put (34-8.50/567 points) and second in the 200-meter dash (25.09/879 points).
Dent will finish the heptathlon beginning at 11 a.m. Friday. The second day of the men's decathlon will begin at 10 a.m. Other events on the docket for Friday include the men's and women's triple jump, men's pole vault, women's high jump and a bevy of track events.
