Jan. 21, 2012
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama track and field team posted 18 top 10 performances and three first place finishes at the Auburn Invitational this weekend staged at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Crimson Tide also got wins from Kamal Fuller in the men’s long jump, Krystle Schade in the women’s high jump and the women’s distance medley relay. “We had a lot of positives this weekend with wins in the high jump against a very deep, talented field and in the long jump,” UA head coach Dan Waters said. “Last night Amethyst [Holmes] became the SEC leader in the weight throw and Tyler [Campbell] did a good job jumping over seven feet again in addition to a lot nice PRs from the team. We’re still looking to make some adjustments trying to get better in our next week of training before we head to New York.” Fuller recorded a jump of 25-3.5 to improve on last week’s result by more than a foot. Schade cleared 5-11.5 in the high jump for her second win in as many weeks and the women’s DMR squad of Katlyn Will, Aubrielle Wright, Elsbeth Denton and Andrea Torske easily won the event with a time of 12:14.75. The men’s DMR squad of Oliver Blake, Joel Lynch, Nicholas Hayes and Austin Duckworth finished third in 10:18.24. Lynch and Duckworth also finished sixth in the 400 meters and mile, respectively with personal bests. In field events for the men, Tyler Campbell cleared 7-0.25 to finish second in the high jump while Jonathan Reid was seventh at 6-6.25. Amethyst Holmes started the meet off strong for the women’s squad with the top throw by a collegiate thrower at 64-8 in the weight throw on Friday evening behind two unattached competitors. Wilamena Hopkins continued the throwers’ efforts on Saturday with a fifth-place performance in the shot put at 49-3.75. Merilyn Uudmae made her triple jump debut at UA by finishing fifth with a jump of 39-11.5 and Alexis Paine finished eighth in the pole vault by clearing 12-1.5. The Tide will have two weeks of training to prepare for its next competition, the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 3-4 at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
