BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
For the second time in the last three weeks, the Alabama swimming and diving teams have come away with a pair of Southeastern Conference honors. The league office announced Tuesday that Kaylin Burchell is the SEC Female Freshman of the Week for the second time this season while diver Tito Ebersole was named the SEC Male Freshman of the Week.
"Both Kaylin and Tito turned in outstanding performance in Baton Rouge," UA head coach Eric McIlquham said. "Overall, we had a strong meet both off the blocks and on the boards and I'm pleased that two of our own were recognized on the conference level for having a great outing."
Burchell, who also earned the honor after the Tide's opener at Florida State, won both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes as well as the 200 individual medley at LSU last Friday with times that rank in the top-10 nationally. She swam to a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.31 before touching at 2:12.92 in the 200 breaststroke, setting an LSU Natatorium record in both events. The Richmond, Ky., native also won the 200 IM against the Tigers with a 2:01.90.
She is ranked first in the SEC in the 100 breaststroke, second in the 200 breaststroke and third in the 200 IM, and turned in the league's top times of the past week in all three events.
Ebersole won both the 1 and 3-meter diving events against the Tigers, taking first off the 1-meter with a 375.15, nearly 50 points better than second place, while out-pointing the second-place finisher in the 3-meter by 10 points with a 384.83. The Colleyville, Texas native ranks fourth in the SEC in both events and has earned his zone qualifying marks in both springboard events.
