TUSCON, Ariz. - In her first competition as part of the United States National Team, University of Alabama freshman Callan Buck finished fifth in the preliminary round of the 3-meter board competition at the 18th FINA Junior Diving World Championships being held in Tucson, Ariz., this week, advancing to the finals.

"It was a great first round for Callan, a great way to get her first international competition started," UA head coach Eric McIlquham said. "It's going to be exciting to see what she can do in finals. She's been very steady and clean so far and that has obviously worked for her to this point."

Buck scored a 420.55 over nine dives to advance to the 3-meter finals. She came away with an average score of 6.98 in prelims, including a 7.5 on her final dive. The Keller, Texas, native was just 1.3 points behind Elena Bertochhi of Italy who took fourth in prelims while China's Liu Tian leads the competition with 464.70 points.

Buck was Team USA's top scorer in the 3-meter prelims. The USA's Kaylea Arnett also advanced to finals after taking seventh with a score 408.50.

Crimson Tide diving coach Pat Greenwell, the 2009 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, is also in Tucson as part of the international judging panel, although he is not part of the women's 3-meter panel.
