TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head swimming and diving coach Dennis Pursley has announced that he has retained long-time Crimson Tide diving coach Pat Greenwell as a member of his staff. Greenwell has been named Southeastern Conference Diving Coach of the Year a league-record six times and has coached Tide divers to eight SEC Diver of the Year honors.

"Pat is one of the nation's top diving coaches and I am excited to have him as a part of this staff," Pursley said. "He has consistently had Alabama divers vying for conference and national championships and earning All-American honors. His commitment to excellence has been reflected in the consistently outstanding achievements of his divers throughout the years."

Having just finished his 25th season with the Tide, Greenwell's athletes have earned 68 All-American honors and won 21 SEC titles since 1988. Two of his athletes have won NCAA championships, with Brent Roberts winning the platform in 1998 and Lane Bassham winning the 3-meter board in 2004.

The 2004 season also saw Greenwell recognized as the NCAA Championships Coach of the Meet after Bassham took first off the 3-meter and second off the 1-meter and both she and Crystal Rasmussen earned All-American honors, leading Alabama to 21st place overall. Bassham was also named Diver of the Meet for her efforts.

Greenwell's students have also excelled internationally. In the summer of 2011, Aaron Fleshner, who won his third SEC title under Greenwell's tutelage in 2010, made a pair of trips to China as part of the United States' national team, first to Shanghai for the FINA World Championships and later to Shenzia for the World University Games. He finaled at both championships and has set himself up well for a run at the U.S. Olympic team this summer.

Former Greenwell students Rafael Alvarez and Rourke both finaled at the Olympic Games and Roberts was the United States Olympic team alternate on the platform in 2000 after finishing third at the Olympic Trials.

Under Greenwell's tutelage, Rourke became the first diver in conference history to win all three diving events at the SEC Championships, doing so in 1991.

An active member of U.S. Diving as both a coach and a judge, Greenwell has served as the U.S. National Coach for competitions in China and Canada. In 1997 and 1999 he served as the U.S. judge at the World University Games.
