Swimming and Diving hosts Emory in Final Home Meet of the Season

Jan. 24, 2014

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama men's and women's swimming and diving teams will close out the home portion of their schedule against Emory University Saturday (Jan. 25) starting at 11 a.m. in the Alabama Aquatic Center.

The Crimson Tide will honor the 2014 senior class and their accomplishments before the meet starting at 10:40 a.m. Saturday is also Alabama's Power of Pink meet, helping raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The initiative is in its 10th year at Alabama.

"It is a special day, and in some ways a little emotional," Pursley said. "We just want to make sure it's a positive one."

For the men's team, All-American BJ Hornikel, Vlad Caciuc, Jake Carloni, Brian Carr, Cameron Conners, Philip Dockery, Hunter Hinson, Alex Pujol, George Wong, Andrew Wrist, and Luke Zippi will be honored.

On the women's side of the meet, 2011 SEC Freshman Diver of the Year Paige McCleary, captain Anna Rae Gwarjanski, Callan Buck, Stephanie Kinsey, Callie Nettles, Lauren Piper and Katie Schroeder will be recognized.

The Tide is looking to continue to grow and build off of its last meet when both the men and women's team picked up victories.

"We want to stay on track with where we were in our last competition against Kentucky and Arkansas, as far as team spirit and the energy we bring to the deck," Pursley said. "We want to build on that this weekend."

With the SEC Championships rapidly approaching, swimmers who have already earned a spot on the Tide's SEC roster will swim races that will prepare for them for events they don't normally get a chance to during the regular season, but may compete in come championship time. The swimmers who are still battling for a spot on the Tide's SEC squad will be using the meet to try and make the meet.

"It will serve a different purpose for all the people on the team," Pursley said. "Swimmers on the bubble will swim their best events and try to post times that will secure them a spot on the SEC roster."
