Ferguson Sweeps Shot Put and Discus Titles for Alabama on Day 2 of the Crimson Tide Invitational

Season and personal best efforts abound as Tide turns focus to next week’s west coast swing
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Kord Ferguson swept the men's shot put and discus titles as Alabama wrapped up the final day of competition at the Crimson Tide Relays on Saturday at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex.
Alabama finished 1-3-4-5 in the men's discus with Ferguson winning the event with a season-best mark of 194-9 (59.36m). Senior Joe Williams finished third at 191-3 (58.29m), which is also a season best. Senior Hayden Reed finished fourth at 185-4 (56.50m) and sophomore Daniel Haugh finished fifth at 179-8 (54.76m). Ferguson returned a few hours later to win the shot put with a season-best effort of 60-10 (18.54m) on his final throw of the competition. Senior Kyle Felpel finished second with a season-best 59-6 ¼ (18.14m). Reed was fourth at 57-9 ½ (17.61m) and senior Nathan Karr was sixth at 56-3 ¼ (17.15m).
On the track for the men, senior Robbie Farnham-Rose won the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:45.25 in his first outing of the season and freshman Will Allen was the top collegiate finisher in the men's 400 meters in a personal-best 47.41.
For the women, senior Quanesha Burks led a sweep of the top three spots the 100 meters with a personal-best time of 11.36 and teamed with senior Diamond Gause and freshmen Symone Darius and Takyera Roberson to win the women's 4x100-meter relay in 44.02. Senior Vanessa Clerveaux won the women's 100-meter hurdles in a season-best 13.29 and Gause won the women's 200 meters in 23.44. Sophomore Kristyn Williams was the first collegiate finisher in the women's 800 meters, crossing the line in a personal-best time of 2:08.44. The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Janel Pate, Darius, Gause and Roberson capped the evening with a win in a season-best 3:36.69.
In women's field event action, junior Filippa Fotopoulou won the women's long jump with a personal-best leap of 20-8 ½ (6.31m) on her second-to-last attempt of the competition and senior Lakan Taylor won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 13-8 ¼ (4.17m).
"We had a lot of very good results today," head coach Dan Waters said. "Our throwers had a great day, led by Kord Ferguson's wins in the shot put and the discus and Haley Teel did well in both events on the women's side. We won several events and had a tremendous amount of personal- and season-bests. All-in-all, it was a good day. Now we can turn our focus to next weekend."
Alabama will travel to California next weekend to participate in a pair of meets in the Los Angeles area. Both teams will compete at the Mount Sac Relays on April 13-14 and will also participate in the UCLA 5-Way meet on April 15.
Men's Event Summaries – Crimson Tide Invitational- Day 2
4x100-Meter Relay – The men's 4x100-meter relay team of junior Terry Jernigan, senior Steven Gayle, freshman Will Allen and sophomore Skyler Bowden finished third in 40.31.
400 Meters – Freshman Will Allen finished second was the top collegiate finisher in the men's 400 meters, posting a time of 47.41 in his collegiate debut at that distance. Sophomore Skyler Bowden finished sixth in a season-best 48.18.
100 Meters – Junior Terry Jernigan finished was the fourth collegiate finisher in the men's 100 meters in 10.62. Freshman Alize Ford finished fifth in 10.64 in his college outdoor debut.
800 Meters – Senior Payton Ballard finished fourth in the men's 400 meters in a personal-best time of 1:50.74. Sophomore Josh Short finished sixth in a personal-best 1:53.02. Freshman Oliver Rigg was seventh in 1:53.67 in his collegiate debut at that distance. Senior Andrew Harris was eighth at 1:54.01.
200 Meters – Freshman Will Allen finished fifth in the men's 200 meters in 21.48 in his collegiate outdoor debut at that distance. Sophomore Matthew Likely finished 12th at 21.81.
1,500 Meters – Senior Robbie Farnham-Rose won the men's 1,500 meters in 3:45.25 in his first competition of the outdoor season.
4x400-Meter Relay – The squad of sophomore Skyler Bowden, junior Terry Jernigan, freshman Will Allen and senior Andrew Harris finished third in 3:14.37.
Discus – Alabama finished 1-3-4-5 in the men's discus with sophomore Kord Ferguson winning the event with a season-best mark of 194-9 (59.36m). Senior Joe Williams finished third at 191-3 (58.29m), which is also a season best. Senior Hayden Reed finished fourth at 185-4 (56.50m) and sophomore Daniel Haugh finished fifth at 179-8 (54.76m). Reed and Haugh were making their season debuts.

4x100-Meter Relay – The Alabama "A" relay of seniors Quanesha Burks and Diamond Gause and freshmen Symone Darius and Takyera Roberson won the women's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.02. The "B" team of seniors Vanessa Clerveaux and Alex Gholston, sophomore Janel Pate and senior Domonique Williams finished second in 44.32. The "C" team of juniors Olivia and Filippa Fotopoulou, senior Brianna Sims and freshman Amanda Crawford finished fourth in 45.13.
3,000-Meter Steeplechase – Freshman Caroline Brooks finished sixth in her first collegiate women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:22.37.
100-Meter Hurdles – Senior Vanessa Clerveaux won the women's 100-meter hurdles in a season-best 13.29. Sophomore Stacey Destin was 10th in a personal-best 14.18 and senior Passion Gamble finished 19th at 14.86.
400 Meters – Freshman Takyera Roberson was the second collegiate finisher in the 400 meters in her collegiate debut in the event outdoors in a time of 53.95.
100 Meters – Senior Quanesha Burks led a sweep of the top three spots in the women's 100 meters with a personal-best time of 11.36. Sophomore Janel Pate finished second in a personal-best 11.63. Olivia Fotopoulou finished third in a season-best 11.71.
800 Meters – Sophomore Kristyn Williams was the first collegiate finisher in the women's 800 meters, crossing the line in a personal-best time of 2:08.44.
400-Meter Hurdles – Junior Kaitlin Walker finished seventh in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.88. Sophomore Jada Jackson was 19th in a season-best 1:08.34.
200 Meters – Senior Diamond Gause won the women's 200 meters in 23.44 as Alabama six of the top 10 spots in the race. Senior Domonique Williams was fifth in 24.04. Senior Alex Gholston was sixth in 24.06. Junior Olivia Fotopoulou was seventh in 24.11. Senior Brianna Sims was ninth in 24.19 and freshman Amanda Crawford was 10th in a personal best 24.25. The times for Fotopoulou, Sims and Crawford are personal bests.
1,500 Meters – Sophomore Nicole Gardner finished second in the women's 1,500 meters in 4:25.53. Senior Hannah Waggoner was third in 4:27.74 and junior Jessica Gray was 11th in 4:40.81. The times are personal-bests for all three.
4x400-Meter Relay – The quartet of sophomore Janel Pate, freshman Symone Darius, senior Diamond Gause and freshman Takyera Roberson won the women's 4x400-meter relay in a season-best 3:36.69.
Discus – Junior Haley Teel finished fifth in the women's discus in her first outing of the season with a mark of 163-6 (49.85m). The throw is the best this season for Alabama. Freshman Hannah Chappell finished 10th with a personal-best throw of 148-2 (45.16m). Sophomore Holly Julifs finished 11th at 146-1 (44.53m).
