NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 3 ranked Alabama gymnastics team fell at No. 1 Oklahoma by a score of 197.750-196.700 to open the 2017 season Friday night in Lloyd Nobles Arena.
"We came here with the goal of being competitively consistent throughout the night," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "While we had many wonderful things happen tonight, we fell short of that goal in a few areas, especially vault and floor, which I expected based on where we've been in our preparation. The good news is that once we get the jitters out and start to move forward on those events, we will be where we want to be with a team that can be amazing."
Alabama got off to a strong start on the uneven bars, scoring a 49.325, led by a 9.9 from junior Kiana Winston and 9.875s from senior Amanda Jetter and junior Mackenzie Brannan. Oklahoma scored a 49.575 on the uneven bars.Â
Senior Keely McNeer led the way for Alabama on the vault, scoring a 9.825 from the opening position, pacing Alabama to a 49.000 team score. Freshman Maddie Desch, junior Nickie Guerrero and Winston all scored 9.8s on the vault. Oklahoma scored a 49.450 on the vault.Â
On the floor exercise Guerrero, sophomore Ari Guerra and Winston earned 9.85s, leading Alabama to a 49.025 team score. The Sooner scored a 49.500 on the floor exercise.Â
The Tide finished strong on the balance beam led by a huge 9.95 from Winston, tallying a team mark of 49.350. Alabama also got 9.875s from Guerrero and Sims. The Sooners scored a 49.225 on the balance beam.Â
"I'm so proud of how we finished out the night and I look forward to seeing us take that performance into next week and our home opener," Duckworth said.
The Tide's home opener on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. CT, comes against 2016 NCAA runner-up and preseason No. 2 LSU. Season tickets are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum and online at RollTide.com.
