TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A pair of Alabama student-athletes were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Women's At-Large First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, which was announced this week. Senior golfer Brooke Pancake and senior tennis player Courtney McLane earned first-team honors and are now on the Academic All-America ballot.
"We're excited and proud to once again have multiple honorees on the all-district team," assistant athletics director for student services Jon Dever said. "Brooke and Courtney are tremendous ambassadors for our University, excelling on all levels off the collegiate experience, and we look forward to seeing how they fare on the national ballot again this year."
Student-athletes are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. In an expanded Academic All-American program, CoSIDA doubled the number of student-athletes honored this year, which includes NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants on the teams.
Pancake, a member of the Tide's NCAA Championship-bound golf team, earned first-team Capital One Academic All-American honors in 2011 as well as the 2011 Edith Cummings Munson Award from the NGCA for the student-athlete with the highest GPA among first-team All-Americans. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is a three-time SEC Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-time NGCA Scholar Athlete. She earned a 4.0 GPA for her career and graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing this May.
McLane, a two-year recipient of the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, earned a spot on the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Team. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native was named to the All-SEC Second Team three times during her career and will be making her third straight appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championship this week. She earned her undergraduate degree in management in three years while holding a 4.0 GPA and completed her master's degree in marketing this year, where she also finished with a 4.0 GPA.
