TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Athletics department's Power of Pink initiative, sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota, hosts its winter events this week, starting with Sunday's women's basketball game in Foster Auditorium and concluding with Friday's gymnastics meet in Coleman Coliseum.

"We are all looking forward to Sunday's game and what it stands for," UA head women's basketball coach Wendell Hudsonsaid. "The Power of Pink initiative is just another example of our athletic department's efforts to go above and beyond the game. We take pride in helping to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer and look forward to seeing this initiative grow every year."

Hudson and company will take on LSU starting at 1 p.m. CST Sunday in a game that will feature a number of giveaways, including pink t-shirts, an iPad, a television, iPods and more.

The initiative, originally started in 2004 by Crimson Tide gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer in the West Alabama community, grew to include all women's teams at the Capstone in the fall of 2009.

"I realize that I am very lucky," Patterson said. "Not only to be healthy, but also that I have access to excellent medical care. Not everyone is so fortunate, and I wanted to do something that would help those who need it most."

In this country alone, a woman will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, and the odds of overcoming breast cancer are much higher if the disease is detected in the early stages, a fact that makes the Tide's efforts even more vital.

The Alabama gymnastics team hosts Arkansas Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in its eighth Power of Pink meet. Pink related giveaways on Friday will include 2000 t-hirts, a laptop, a dozen iPods, a television as well as hats and umbrellas.

The Alabama Athletics Power of Pink sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota slate features nine women's athletics events during the 2011-12 academic year. The Tide volleyball, cross country, soccer and swimming and diving team hosted events in the fall while the softball, tennis and rowing teams will host events in the spring.
